Borisslav Ivanov graduated from the Bulgarian State Conservatory, now Academy of Music, in two specialties: Chorus conducting with Prof. Georgi Dimitrov and Orchestra conducting with Prof. Vladi Simeonov. Specializes in Berlin at Komische Oper with Kurt Mazur and in Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra with Herbert von Karayan.


Borisslav Ivanov begins his professional career in the Opera of Varna, followed by work in Plovdiv from 1970 to 1975. After that he returns to Varna again and from 1975 to 1979 he is a Director and Principal Conductor of the Opera House and Director of the International Music Festival “Varna Summer”.

Since 1985 Borislav Ivanov`s name has been associated mainly with the Plovdiv Opera House as a Director and Conductor during more than 15 years.

 

On his initiative “Evenings of Verdi” were held on one of the Plovdiv hills, which later on turned to Verdi`s Festival on the stage of the unique Ancient Theater. Five years ago he initiated the Opera Festival on the picturesque ancient island of Rhode in Greece and from this season – on the island of Cyprus as well. Borisslav Ivanov has worked as a Principal Musical Director of the Opera in Ankara and as a Deputy General Musical Director and First conductor of the Opera in Kassel – Germany. He is invited as early as his specialization in Germany for Chief Conductor and later on for a General Musical Director of “Das Symphony Orchestra” in Berlin. It is now 40 years that Borisslav Ivanov permanently guides this orchestra and has conducted over 700 concerts in the renowned hall of Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Maestro has more than 100 titles in his repertoire of classical and oratorio composers. Well known are his partiality for cantata-oratorio works.

 

A particular record is the performance under his guidance of the famous work of Karl Orf “Carmina Burana”. Borisslav Ivanov is among the few conductors who have been guest-stars all over the world with Bulgarian Opera Companies at the renowned musical festival in Spain, Malta Island, in Belgium, Denmark, Italy, South Korea etc. In the individual performances of the conductor we have to mention his success in Bolshoi Theater , Deutche Oper and Staatsoper Berlin; his appearance in Vienna Staatsoper in three performances – “Entfuhrung aus dem Serial” by W.A. Mozart, “Cavalleria Rusticana” by Mascagni and “Pagliacci” by Leoncavallo. Until now no Bulgarian conductor has appeared at the conductor`s stand of Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and before the singers of Vienna Staatsoper.


For his whole artistic activity Borisslav Ivanov was decorated with the “Ciril and Methodius” order – Second degree; he is a bearer of the honorary prize “Plovdiv”; the Gold Medal of the Italian Government for contributions to the Italian operatic music and the highest distinction of the German Government “Cross for contributions to the culture of Germany” – First degree.


In the period 2004-2008 Borisslav Ivanov was a director of the Sofia National Opera.


Now he is a general manager of INTERCONCERT.
